vdB 96: This reflection and emission nebula carries the number 96 in the catalogue of reflection nebulae, published in 1966 by Sidney van den Berg. It is not often photographed, but reveals its depth only in very long exposures. The blue shining reflection nebula is embedded into a dramatic skyscape of emission and dark nebulae. The contours of shock fronts in several parts of the image indicate that this is an active star birth region.
