North America to Butterfly: This wide-angle mosaic image from the constellation of Cygnus or the Swan covers one of the most dramatic parts in the sky. It spans from the North America Nebula (NGC 7000) on the left to the Butterfly Nebula (IC 1318) on the lower right. Numerous emission and dark nebulae can be observed. Many of the stringlike features are presenting shock or ionisation fronts, where the light of very luminous young stars brings the interstellar matter to glow. The whole area is one of the hugest stargenerating regions known.
The bright star above center is Deneb, the brightest star in the constellation of Cygnus.
The two-panel mosaic image was composed from frames taken with three different narrow band filters letting pass only the H-alpha line of hydrogen, the [OIII] line of oxygen and the [SII] line of sulfur. The composition was done using the socalled Hubble palette for arranging the colors.
