Gum Nebula and Vela SNR: This wide field image spans nearly 40x30 degrees in the sky and covers parts of the constellations Vela and Puppis. In the dense star field of the Milky Way hides the huge Gum Nebula complex, a faint nebula structure which has probably originated from a tremendous super nova explosion approx. 1 million years ago. The image displays the complete extension of this complex(red structures).
Embedded in it are another remnants of a super nova explosion, the so called Vela SNR (mainly the fine greenish filaments in the image). This explosion is believed to have occured much later like about 11000 years ago.
The significance of this image lies in the fact, that the two events are clearly seen to be seperated on their full scale.
