Starbirth-Region NGC 346 in SMC
Starbirth-Region NGC 346 in SMC: The brightest object in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) is the huge starbirth-region NGC 346. It contains several massive stars within compact HII areas. These stars emit 60 times more energy than those in the Great Orion Nebula. This is why NGC 346 is also referred to as the smaller version of the famous Tarantula Nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC).
The image shows NGC 346 and its vicinity with several Globular Clusters and Emission Nebulae.
It was taken at the IAS astronomical site at the Hakos farm in Namibia.
