Vela SNR Mosaic
Vela SNR Mosaic: In the southern constellations of Vela and Puppis a very large nebula complex can be found, named after the Australian astromomer Colin Stanley Gum, the origin of which is believed to be a Super Nova explosion approx. one million years ago. Embedded in this vast complex is the Vela Super Nova Remnant from another explosion not so long ago.
This mosaic covers nearly the complete extension of the Vela SNR augmented by the intricate web of filaments of the Super Nova shockfronts. The round emission nebula at the left hand edge of the image is GUM 14 (RCW 27) and the brighter smaller one nearby is GUM 17 (RCW 33).
