Topsy-Turvy Galaxy
Topsy-Turvy Galaxy: Galaxy NGC 1313 in the Southern constellation of Reticulum is an Irregular Galaxy with many regions of star generation (star burst), the origin of which is widely unknown. Its ragged appearance, not like many Spiral Galaxies, prompted also its common name.
This very deep image shows an extended region of material around the actual spiral, which is also disturbed and quite unusual. NGC 1313 has a diameter of approx. 50000 LY and is 15 million LY distant.
The galaxy in the lower left is NGC 1313A.
The image was taken at the observatory of IAS at Hakos Farm in Namibia.
