Southern Seagull Nebula: In the Tarantulum Nebula Region one finds numerous Emission- and Reflection Nebulae, only rarely photographed. One of the more prominent parts is displayed in this image.
Lower left of center there are three nebulae close together (from left): NGC 2040, NGC 2035 and NGC 2032. The three together are also called the Southern Seagull Nebula or sometimes also Dragon´s Head. The round red emission nebula on the far left is DEM 250.
The wheel-like greenish nebula in the lower right part of the image is designated as NGC 2020; a very interesting object, which after newer research is a massive star in the final stage of its life, a socalled Wolf-Rayet-Star. The large red emission nebula to its right is designated for the embedded Open Cluster NGC 2014. In the image center and around it are several more Open Clusters and nebulous structers completing the dramatic scene.
The image was taken at the IAS astronomical site at the Hakos farm in Namibia.
