Tarantula Nebula

Tarantula Nebula: NGC 2070 in the Large Magellanic Cloud, which is a satellite galaxy of our Milky Way, is one of the most prominent emission nebulae in the Southern Hemisphere. Young bright stars excite the atoms of the surrounding gas to emit radiation. From this gas and the star dust from previous generations of stars new stars are born.

This image is a result of a total exposure time of nearly 6.5 hours of the Tarantula Nebula. In this emission line image in mapped colours the chaotic large-scale structure of this vast emission nebula can be studied. It is a pitty that this also for visual observation with small telescopes outstanding object is only visible for observers in the Southern Hemisphere.
