Running Chicken Nebula

Running Chicken Nebula: The image displays in finer details the "body" of the Running Chicken than in a wider field of view. In the center the Open Cluster IC 2948, which generates by its intensive radiation most of the emission nebula. The dark spots in various parts of the image are called Bok or Thackeray Globules, in which very likely new stars are born, which are not yet visible, because they are still enshrouded in dust clouds obstructing the light.

The image was selected "Astrophoto of the Week" by Astronomie.de.
